When the congregation of a church in Fort Walton Beach, Florida learned that their pastor and his wife brought a woman into their home to help her when she was down on her luck, they weren’t surprised.  But, when that woman later went missing and they heard whispers of secrets hidden from them and the public, they were deeply shocked and needed answers.  This is the story of Marie Carlson’s disappearance and murder, and the lasting impressions he made on her family and friends.

Today, we’re diving into the serene and scenic Emerald Coast, specifically Fort Walton Beach in Florida’s Panhandle, known for its white-sand beaches and vibrant, emerald-green waters. But behind this paradise lies a haunting story of mystery, trust, betrayal, and ultimately, justice in the case of Marie Carlson.

Marie’s journey to Fort Walton Beach was marked by resilience. Raised by a family in the U.S. after being born in the Philippines, she grew up with a passion for law enforcement and eventually became a Deputy Sheriff, hoping one day to join the FBI. Despite her strength and ambition, Marie’s life took many turns. After her marriage to Jeff Carlson ended, she moved to Fort Walton Beach to find a fresh start, eventually connecting with a local church, Calvary Emerald Coast.

There, Marie met James Flanders, the church pastor, and his wife, Tanya. Marie felt welcomed by the Flanders family, even moving in with them temporarily as she rebuilt her life. But what seemed like a supportive living arrangement took an unexpected turn when Marie became pregnant with her second daughter, Grace. As it turned out, James Flanders was the father, and what had initially been a plan for him and Tanya to adopt the child evolved into a complex, secretive relationship involving Marie as a “second wife.”

In October 2011, Marie’s friends and family received an unsettling text message saying she had left Fort Walton Beach to follow her heart, but she left her newborn daughter behind with the Flanders. Her family’s alarm grew, especially her sister Esta, who reported her missing. The investigation quickly revealed strange circumstances. Marie’s car was found parked at the airport, yet she hadn’t boarded any flights. Detectives uncovered her and James’s intimate relationship and learned she had confided in friends about wanting out, though she wouldn’t leave without her daughter.

The case hit roadblocks, with dead ends in forensics, phone records, and the church community’s silence. Detectives suspected foul play but had only circumstantial evidence until a breakthrough came three years later when they decrypted text backups on Marie’s computer. This digital trail not only confirmed the relationship but showed her deep dissatisfaction with the arrangement.

Five years after her disappearance, James was finally charged with second-degree murder. Facing trial, he confessed to manslaughter, revealing Marie’s tragic end. In his confession, James claimed an argument led to Marie’s death, and he buried her in their backyard. Detectives had previously searched there but had missed her remains.

James Flanders was sentenced to 15 years for Marie’s death, a case that resonates deeply with the Fort Walton Beach community. Her story is a sobering reminder of the dark secrets that sometimes lie beneath idyllic surfaces and the resilience of those who seek justice for loved ones.
