The Busby family was a typical family living in a sleepy beach community. But in August of 1979, all that came crashing down when John Busby was shot and nearly killed on his way to work as a police officer. While John knew who his assailant was from the instant the trigger was pulled, the man responsible would escape justice because of his connections within their community.
This is a brief summary of the case, for a much more in depth look at it, watch the above video!
Falmouth, Massachusetts, is known for its scenic beauty, historic charm, and outdoor activities. It is home to beautiful beaches, a vibrant arts community, and Woods Hole, a hub for marine science. Falmouth’s population grew significantly over the 20th century, and notable residents include the Affleck brothers and astronaut Sunita Williams.
In 1979, Cylin Busby’s life changed dramatically when her father, John, a police officer, was shot. On the night of August 31, 1979, John was ambushed while driving to work. Despite being severely injured, John wrote a note identifying Mel Reine, a local businessman with a violent history, as the shooter. Reine, who had a reputation for bullying and criminal activity, had previously been involved in arson and suspected murders, including the disappearance of his wife.
John survived surgery but was left emotionally and physically scarred. The Busby family faced ongoing threats and were eventually forced to relocate to Tennessee, where they assumed new identities. In 2003, John’s brother-in-law, John Reine, confessed to being involved in the shooting, but the statute of limitations had passed, preventing legal action.
Mel Reine lived out his final years suffering from dementia and passed away in 2013. His wife, Shirley, was murdered in 2005, with the case remaining unsolved.
