In September of 2004, Mary Lou Jones called one of her daughter’s friends in Florida, concerned that she had gone several days without hearing from her daughter Michelle. The friend, who also hadn’t heard from Michelle in days, went over to Michelle’s house, and discovered a horrific scene. Michelle and her aunt Teri had been savagely murdered by Teri’s husband, Charlie Brandt. Charlie then took his own life. An investigation into the life of Charlie Brandt shocked detectives as they found that this was not the first murder Charlie had committed, that he could’ve been responsible for over 20 vicious, graphic murders across the state of Florida.
Here’s a summarized version of the story. For the full story and episode, watch the video above!
Charlie Brandt’s Background
Born in 1957 to German immigrants, Charlie grew up in a family that moved frequently due to his father’s work. He was close to his mother but struggled socially and was often bullied. At 13, Charlie committed a horrifying act: he fatally shot his pregnant mother and injured his father. After this incident, Charlie spent a year in a psychiatric hospital but was released into his father’s custody.
Despite this history, Charlie seemed to live a normal life, eventually working for a defense contractor and marrying Teri Helfrich in 1986. They appeared to be a loving couple, settling in Big Pine Key, Florida.
The 2004 Double Murder
In September 2004, Charlie and Teri evacuated to the home of Teri’s niece, Michelle Jones, due to Hurricane Ivan. Days later, Charlie murdered Teri and Michelle in a gruesome attack. He stabbed Teri seven times and mutilated Michelle, decapitating her and removing her organs, before hanging himself in the garage.
The Investigation
Detectives determined it was a murder-suicide. In Charlie’s home, they found evidence of his obsession with death and necrophilia, including disturbing online searches and anatomical posters.
A History of Violence
Charlie’s sister, Angela, revealed his earlier crime—the murder of their mother in 1971—and his attempted murder of their father. Shockingly, his family had never addressed the incident openly, and Teri likely never knew about it.
Potential Links to Other Murders
Investigators suspect Charlie might be connected to other unsolved crimes, including the 1989 murder of Sherry Perisho near his home in Big Pine Key. Sherry was disemboweled and nearly decapitated in a manner similar to Michelle’s murder. Witnesses identified Charlie as resembling a suspect in the case.
Charlie Brandt’s case remains a chilling example of hidden violence and missed warning signs, leaving questions about how many other crimes he may have committed.
